Icelandic Taxes

Posted on Sunday 13 July 2008

My Macbook’s wireless card crashed 2 months ago. It just stopped working and disconnected itself from the router after 5 minutes of use. Since I didn’t install a tricky software nor update anything on it, it sounded bad. I tried for a week or two some tweaks and customization but after hours spent on geek’s forum there was obviously nothing working. I realized my best chance would be to buy a new one. And so I did, on ebay. The sender delivered the package the 9th of June and I have never received any notification by the Icelandic post. A couple of phone calls later, someone at the post office tried a little harder than the others and managed to find my package. It took 5 weeks… I went on Thursday morning to get it. The customs are really far away from down town… And My bike and I weren’t very happy :s. But the icing on the cake was when the custom asked me to pay ISK 894 tax on a $19 good. Which is roughly, 60% tax…

After, spending almost the entire weekend on it, considering I had to ran everywhere to get myself a 3mn philipps screw driver, I’m now 100% sure that the card they sent me is fucked-up. It’s just not recognized. I even reformated the whole system and ran a fresh installation of tiger. I must be cursed or something. Now, at best, I’ll manage to call back the shop were I ordered the card and ask them to send me another one. Which means it’s going to take another month (at best), another trip on the countryside and another 60% tax to pay.
