Atlantica On Board Magazine - Autumn Issue

Posted on Thursday 10 July 2008

After the luck with my small article on Runner’s World magazine, I jumped at the chance to repeat the feat with Atlantica’s article on autumn’s book.

Those days of autumn when the days get shorter and your health gets wobblier. When you get sniffly, snuffy, and groggy and all you want to do is climb under the duvet with a mug of your warmest drink – or chicken soup.

When that happens – what book do you have with you?

What is your “chicken soup” book?

For me the answer is rather simple. Sophie’s World by Jostein Gaarder. Once in a while a book comes along powered by a sort of confidently rendered literary that is propelled onto best-seller lists. These stories fascinate and literally catch you as they force you to meditate within. I was 17 when I first put my hand on Sophie’s World walking along my city’s library narrow hallway. It is a fantastic journey of intellect, reflection and imagination that makes one look at life through the eyes of a child. It is both amusing and gripping. The brightness of this particular book is that it doesn’t feel at all like a lesson of philosophy. Even when the main character spend an entire chapter telling another the history of existence, knowledge, mind and language, the story keeps you intrigued and plunged in the unveiling plot. At the same time it make the book re-readable anytime, and in my case especially when I feel the urge to escape the autumn’s gloom .
