The Story Of How Someone Stole My Identity

Posted on Monday 18 February 2008

Everything started a while ago when I realized some oddity in some old friends behavior. It finally went clear when I had this chat with Sofia last week. She was a bit bitter and asked me why I didn’t call her when I came in Vaasa last summer. I begged her pardon as I never set a foot in Finland last year. What was going on? Apparently she heard from a common friend that I spent some holidays there. After a few seconds she sold me the name of the supposed friend. A name I’ve never heard before. That’s how I got the whole picture. This guy was a friend of the french dude that came studying at the university the second semester and has the same name as I do. Sofia’s friend told her that he met “me” for few drinks. I found it a little bit odd there could be a confusion between me and him. So I went to check if I had his email. We can’t say we where very close but we did some stuff together among exchange students back in the days. No success… I don’t have a facebook account and I don’t use it but I know how much this shit is popular so I asked Jul to log himself in for me. I searched and found my identity thief. And I was amazed to see that in his list of so called “friends” were listed exactly all my friends from Vaasa. What a coincidence, hu? If this guy knew each single contact listed there I would have noticed it. Not mentioning the ones that weren’t students or left before the second semester. erm…
That’s a bit of a shame, but I suppose that people who don’t see a difference between me and that guy are probably not really my friend, are they?
