Inland Empire

Posted on Sunday 6 January 2008

The mother fucking Wordpress owned me one more time bitching about a database error and deleting my 40 lines review of Inland Empire, the last David Lynch movie. So I’ll try to make it short this time…

Back in my solitude and the non-stopping darkness of Reykjavik I ended up going through a forum thread on the internet where the major issue was unconventional movies. Reading a whole bunch of names and reviews pushed me to start seeking for weird movies. After a combo session “Dude, Where’s My Car” and “Harold and Koumar Go To White Castle” directly advised by my 2 Greeks geek friends back in the days, I figured it’s time to prevent my gigantic IQ points loss. My first experience was Gummo. Not much to say about this one. It’s weird yeah, but I’d put that one right under “Ken Park” in sick movies where you feel bad along the minutes more than anything else. Inland Empire was of course a lot discussed in the thread. David Lynch being certainly the most famous director for unconventional movies. I am a huge fan of Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive, so watching his last piece was a normal thing to do. I must say that despite the typical sound and atmosphear of Lynch’s movies that I love, this one lost me a little bit. Like someone in Rotten tomatoes said once: It’s very possibly a work of genius. It could also be the most pretentious pile of garbage ever to make the big screen. But one thing it isn’t is unoriginal. If nothing else, the man should be applauded for that.
