Am I tasting Banana ?

Posted on Sunday 19 November 2006

I have celebrated the Beaujolais nouveau once 2 years ago and I never thought I would celebrate that thing never again. I was far to imaging that Reykjavik will bring me that marketing shit on my doorstep. Yes! Yesterday we celebrated the Beaujolais Nouveau 2006 at work. There are few things I have noticed with the time. First of all, it’s a common habit to state that this year Beaujolais is disgusting. It’s kind of part of the celebration and makes you agree in pro’s opinion. Then comes the taste and the usual exercise that consist of finding out which fruit flavor is more tastable. I tasted a heavy raspberry flavor. Others felt more strawberry. Beaujolais Nouveau is made from the first pressing of gamay grapes in France’s Beaujolais region. The young wine is light, fruity and fresh tasting and is best served slightly chilled. wine lovers often describe it as a wine to drink by mouthfuls instead of sips. The things is after a couple of cup everything changes. People start saying that this year Beaujolais is not that bad before finding it even quite good. They start tasting the flavor of banana and coco nut. And finally think of buying a whole dozen pack. We bought around 50 bottles and of course our fellows friends from the north didn’t let a single drip. In Iceland no matter how much Icelanders there is, if there is a bottle containing alcohol near by, be sure that won’t last long. I’m caricatural of course, but you get the idea.

    Hi there fellow frenchman,

Been reading your blog for a while as I am planning to move to iceland in 2007 and stay about a year. I live in scotland right now. I’m sure Iceland is more expensive though so I was wondering how easy it is to get a job if you don’t speak the language? How are the french perceived there?
Anyway keep up the good work, hope to hear from you.

I can’t really imagine a country more expensive than Iceland. I mean where on earth could you possibly find a beer more expensive than 600 kr (6,5 € - 4,5£) ??? More seriously Iceland’s price level is among Europe’s highest but so is the income level. Price and income levels often go hand in hand. Adding the fact that Having 2 or 3 jobs in Iceland is pretty much common.
Most (every?) of the Icelanders I know have never been unemployed. Jobs are here. A lot of area is seeking workers. Immigration is dangerously growing but still almost non-existent. That’s the main issue of politics in iceland these days. There are facing what we (older european country) have faced a couple of decades ago. Adding that the pride among their culture and language is strong and makes problems dealing with immigration dodgy. I think right now you can still pretend on high-profile jobs without having a knowledge of Icelandic. A law has been voted last week by the Icelandic government in this subject: Every foreigner worker is given 200 hours of Icelandic for free. That could show the current situation. Things are going fast up here and what is said now can’t be applied tomorrow. Even thought I have a clearer picture on that subject now I am personnaly not concerned in my daily life since I don’t work for an Icelandic company.
Another important thing that we feel is the 300 000 inhabitants. Even if somehow you feel isolated from the rest of the world, you can see how much Icelanders are influenced by ‘neighbours’. As an example they are strong fan of UK football premier league and Icelandic tv channel is flooded by all the shit you can see on US teles. English is thus far from being not known by youngsters and elders and is strongly supported by a high education system.
